First Communion and Confirmation

First Communion & Reconciliation – “Saturday Classes”

The Saturday classes are for children wishing to make their First Holy Communion at St Augustine’s. The classes are aimed at children in Yrs 3-5 (i.e. aged 8 – 10).

All details given below have had to be suspended in view of the Covid-19 outbreak and the closure of the church from March 2020.   Keep an eye on the newsletter for news of when we hope to resume them.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2020 –  While our First Communion children’s programme will be beginning as usual in the New Year, we are running, through the autumn, a series of ‘Pre-First Communion’ meetings for the parents of the children concerned. Enrolment meeting 14 September 2019 11.30am in the Upper Room. Each meeting should last for around 40 minutes. It is a good thing, but not essential, if both parents can attend these meetings, particularly if both are Catholic. While children do not have to be at these meetings, feel free to bring them along if you need to! The purpose of these meetings will be to help you develop your own faith and to better assist your children as they go through the programme in the New Year. Registration forms on the tables. Programme to be issued at First Meeting.

Classes start at the beginning of January and will run in parallel with the school year, with breaks for the school holidays. We meet at St Augustine’s in the Upper Room at 11am and the lessons end at 12.30pm with a short prayer to which parents are invited.   When there are larger numbers, there is also an  overflow group which meets from 2.00-3.00pm

The classes are structured around work books which cover preparation for Reconciliation and for First Holy Communion. Each lesson will involve group discussion where we encourage all the children to actively take part, and we allocate some time for the workbooks. However, children will be expected to spend time working on the books at home. This will require some parental involvement.

Children will also receive a Mass book which we shall study in class, spending some time explaining the elements of the Mass. With this in mind it is important for the children to regularly attend Mass so they are able to follow our explanations.

At the end of the first part of their preparation, there is a Service of Reconciliation at which the children receive the Sacrament for the first time.

First Holy Communion takes place at a special Mass (or two, if the numbers are large)  in mid-late June.

Confirmation takes place every year.  Registration for the next course is now closed. It began from 31st January and was to run to 15th May 2020 for a (NOW CANCELLED) Confirmation Mass on 3rd June. (Friday evenings.)  It is pitched at Year 9 onwards.
