First Communion & Reconciliation
The Saturday classes are for children wishing to make their First Holy Communion at St Augustine's. The classes are aimed at children in Yrs 3-5 (i.e. aged 8 - 10). Registration will be in November 2016. You will need a copy of the child's baptism certificate to register.
Classes start at the beginning of January and will run in parallel with the school year, with breaks for the school holidays. We meet at St Augustine’s in the Upper Room at 9am and the lessons end at 10.30am with a short prayer to which parents are invited.
The classes are structured around work books which cover preparation for Reconciliation and for First Holy Communion. Each lesson will involve group discussion where we encourage all the children to actively take part, and we allocate some time for the workbooks. However, children will be expected to spend time working on the books at home. This will require some parental involvement.
Children will also receive a Mass book which we shall study in class, spending some time explaining the elements of the Mass. With this in mind it is important for the children to regularly attend Mass so they are able to follow our explanations.
As part of the preparation process and also a means of introduction to the larger Church community the children are given the chance to carry out the readings at a 9am Sunday Mass in early spring. They will also write and read their own bidding prayers for this service.
At the end of the first part of their preparation, there is a Service of Reconciliation at which the children receive the Sacrament for the first time.
First Holy Communion takes place at a special Mass in June.
Parents who wish their children to be included in the new intake will be invited to register their children in November. This is to give us an early idea of likely numbers. If necessary because of numbers, there will be a Saturday afternoon class to cater for an overflow. There will also be reminders of when the classes start in the newsletter.
Parents will need to attend the first Saturday morning class in early January with their children for formal registration and an opportunity for more detailed explanation and discussion about the classes.
Confirmation takes place every other year. The next one is scheduled for 25 May 2017. Registration began in January 2017 and the course is now FULL. It is pitched at Year 9 onwards.
